Thursday Club holds spring luncheon
Members and guests of the La Cañada Thursday Club recently gathered at the Woodleigh Lane clubhouse to enjoy the organization’s annual spring luncheon and fashion show.
It was the first club event held in the newly-enlarged Centennial Garden patio, inaugurating the club’s celebration of its 100th year of serving the community. On April 19 the club will be hosting the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce mixer, a co-centennial celebration of each organization having reaching the century mark.
Big Brother chief speaks to Kiwanians
Ken Martinet, director of Catholic Big Brothers and Sisters for the past 17 years, was the guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada during last week’s luncheon meeting held at Descanso Gardens.
The Big Brothers organization has been active for more than 100 years and the Los Angeles branch, which Martinet heads, was established 87 years ago. It is non-profit and serves children of all denominations and ethnic backgrounds with 70% currently Hispanic, 20% African American and 5% Caucasian. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization serves these children, who come principally from broken homes.

Democratic Club to meet on Sunday
A meeting of the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will be held on Sunday, April 15, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the home of Lloyd Komesar in La Cañada. Members will be reviewing a slate of candidates for possible club endorsement.

Application period open for scholarships
Graduating seniors of La Cañada High School who reside within the city are invited to apply for one of two $1,000 Mary Ellen Hillgren scholarships administered by the Assistance League of Flintridge, a chapter of the National Assistance League.
The scholarships are intended to help meet the costs of attending a four-year college or university in the fall. Applications are available in the counseling office at LCHS or can be found online at www.alflintridge.org. The deadline is April 12 and the scholarships will be presented at the school’s Senior Awards Ceremony.
The late Mary Ellen Hillgren, a past president of the Flintridge chapter as well as the national league, believed strongly in public education. Along with their applications, students are asked to include a 200-word personal statement on the benefits received from involvement in extracurricular school activities, sports or community service.

Children’s chorus hosts open house
Parents and children interested in learning about the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus are invited to a free open house set for 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28 at its headquarters on the campus of Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 E. Colorado Blvd.
According to Anne Tomlinson, the chorus’ artistic director, annual auditions for youths ages 8 to 12 are set for later in the spring. Anyone interested in auditioning is encouraged to attend the open house.
