The median price for a home in La Cañada Flintridge in late July 2002 was reported to have increased to $754,000, which was 24.9% higher than the same period a year earlier.

One local Realtor said it was the best market he’d seen since 1989 and that properties priced close to market value were receiving multiple offers, some above asking price.

La Cañada resident Barbara Corson was basking in the glow of having been the grand champion in a ladies’ poker tournament sponsored by Bally’s Casino in Reno.

The recreational poker player entered the two-day tournament on a whim and walked away with the top prize: a Waterford crystal bowl.

The La Cañada Women’s 3.5 Michelob Light tennis team swept the San Gabriel Division of the nationwide amateur competition in the summer of 1982. The Hi-Lights ended their season with a 10-0 record.

Forty Years Ago

A ground-breaking ceremony was held for the $60,000 Memorial Park, which would be developed on two acres of La Cañada Unified School District land over the new Foothill Freeway tunnel.

The property was leased to the county, which in turn agreed to develop and maintain the park. The La Cañada Rotary Club donated a flagpole for the new recreational area.

Fifty Years Ago

Paul Zintgraff was named superintendent of schools for La Cañada Unified at an annual salary of $18,960.

Zintgraff, who was coming from a job with the San Diego County Department of Education, was set to begin his new job on Aug. 20, 1962.

Sixty Years Ago

The new La Cañada home for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was dedicated in special services held on Aug. 3, 1952.

The principal speaker at the dedication event was Apostle LeGrand Richards, of Salt Lake City.
