Four days of triple-digit heat in early September 2002 were blamed for power outages that affected some 200,000 Southern California Edison customers. An Edison spokesman said that La Cañada Flintridge was one of the communities that was especially hit hard by the outages.

Church of the Lighted Window announced it would mark the opening of its fall 1992 season with the 16th annual “Launch Day,” which would feature the release of white homing pigeons.

Thirty Years Ago

The new $1.5 million Descanso Gardens education and exhibition building was dedicated in September 1982. Included in the project were a patio entrance, classrooms, a library, gift shop, catering kitchen, gate house, administration building, exhibit hall and recreation area. The exhibit hall was named the Georgie E. Van de Kamp Hall in tribute to the chairman of the building fund.

A resident of the 4900 block of Revlon Drive reported to sheriff’s deputies that someone had stolen a red bantam rooster from his backyard “mini-farm.” The rooster, 18 months old at the time of the theft, was valued at $15.

Two Marines who admitted they had been drinking when they stole a new car in the Long Beach area, were arrested after they crashed the Chevy on Lynnhaven Lane in La Cañada, striking two trees, a light pole and then running up on a front lawn before coming to rest.

La Cañada schools were preparing to welcome students when the 1952-53 school year got underway on Sept. 15. The Valley Sun cover featured siblings Judy and Jerry Brawley of San Juan Way, heading for their second-grade classrooms at Paradise Canyon Elementary School.
