La Cañada council receives update on 210 Freeway rehab
Members of the La Cañada Flintridge City Council were updated Monday by a Caltrans representative on the status of the 210 (Foothill) Freeway Pavement Rehabilitation Project, a three-year, $148.5-million construction effort that will begin in October.
Reza Fateh, the Caltrans engineer managing the project, explained the scope of the work, to be completed in four phases. Workers will replace and grind surface lanes across a 9.7-mile stretch of freeway from Dunsmore Avenue in La Crescenta to Pasadena’s Los Robles Avenue, he said.
The project also includes improvements to tunnel lighting near the interchange between the Foothill Freeway and the 134 Freeway, said Fateh, pointing out several areas in La Canada, La Crescenta, Glendale and Montrose where traffic would be impacted as concrete was lain and set.
Council members asked how the project might conflict with the Devil’s Gate Dam sediment removal project, expected to bring hundreds of trucks through town for a period of at least five years.
The engineer replied that the county was aware of the pavement rehabilitation project, but that he did not know if the Flood Control District, which is overseeing the sediment removal project, was aware of a possible schedule conflict.
Council member Laura Olhasso asked whether the new pavement laid would be quieter, mentioning the city’s own attempt to build three of 23 necessary sound walls to muffle freeway noise. She was told that, to maximize the life of the new lanes, engineers were laying concrete. That substance tends to be harder, more durable and louder than rubberized pavement, Fateh said.
Fateh said that offramps would be paved with the quieter asphalt, but said the grinding of the freeway lanes would make for a smoother ride and less noise.
