News agencies from around the world reported the anticipation among engineers and scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as the Cassini-Huygens mission, managed by JPL, reached the end of its seven-year voyage to begin exploring Saturn and its moons.

A deputy sheriff assigned to the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station, Paul Dino, was given the job of patrolling by bicycle in La Cañada Flintridge to assist with crime control. Hours for the new patrol were set from 4 to 10 p.m. The $895 bike purchased by the city to be used for the program was a fully equipped Giant 15-speed mountain bike in a deep forest green that boasted a radio communication system.

Anne Kursinski, then 25, was named a member of the United States Olympic Equestrian Team as one of five riders who would compete in individual and team show jumping during the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Kursinski had been training at the Flintridge Riding Club since she was 4 years old. After spending some time training in New Jersey, she was scheduled to travel to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia on July 23 to compete with the team.

It was announced that Flintridge Preparatory School had reached a lease agreement with Caltrans for the space under the Foothill Freeway over-crossing at Foothill Boulevard and Hampton Road for a 10-year period, with four 10-year renewal options. It was suggested that the young Curnutts and others could more safely — and legally — enjoy a fireworks display by attending Fourth of July festivities at the Rose Bowl.

The La Cañada-Flintridge Newcomers’ Club, which had formed earlier in the year and had 40 members, in July 1954 was offered the use of the social hall at Lutheran Church in the Foothills for its monthly meetings. The purpose of the organization was to help new arrivals to the community become acquainted with each other and with the area.
