La Cañada runs well at Mt. SAC
The La Cañada High boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams ran to fine results at the Mount San Antonio Invitational Friday at Mount San Antonio College.
The girls’ team placed seventh out of 22 teams in the Division III girl’s varsity race with 214 points and a team time of 1:41:17. Anna Frederich placed highest for the Spartans, finishing 16th with a time of 18 minutes 59 seconds. Meghan Fuelling was just eight seconds behind (18th; 19:07). Courtney Schulte (58th; 20:59), Eloise Dimase-Nordling (62nd; 21:06), Holly Shreckengast (63rd; 21:06) and Rachel Thorp (67th; 21:10) all ran close together, rounding out La Cañada’s top six.
There were 135 runners who competed in the Division III boys’ Team Sweepstakes race. Andrew Fisher had the best time for the Spartans (24th; 15:55), while Brendan Greene (61st; 16:23), Erick Lankey (85th’ 16:52) and Anton Cwik (130th; 17:49) also scored for the locals.
Spartans water polo picks up wins
The La Cañada boys’ water polo team came up with some big victories Monday, beating two ranked teams, in the Hank Vellecamp Tournament
The Spartans defeated Mira Costa — ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division III — 9-8 and Peninsula — No. 10 in Division III — 10-8
The wins advances La Cañada to the quarterfinals Friday, where it will be taking on No. 1-ranked Damien this Friday.
It was a balanced effort against Peninsula, as Jack Depew, Chase Borisoff, Justin Lee, Bo Mattix and Allen Morovati all scored two goals each. Borisoff also added three assists.
In goal, keeper Reed Shankwiler had 10 blocks
Against Mira Costa, Depew stepped up to score four goals, including two on penalty shots. Mattix added three and Lee had two. Borisoff had three assists.
Shankwiler recorded 12 blocks
Aquatics Center holds benefit gala
The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center Water Polo Club’s second annual Benefit Gala was held on Oct. 9.
More than $15,000 was raised to directly benefit the Rose Bowl Water Polo program, which has grown to more than 200 members, including boys’ and girls’ up to the age of 18. Seventy-two area schools and more than 50 parent volunteers participate in the program.
The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center is a non-profit organization committed to providing state-of-the-art aquatic opportunities to all members of our community, regardless of their ability to pay. The center’s two Olympic pools and diving well provide a full range of aquatic programs in swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming, water aerobics and lap swimming.
Flintridge Sacred Heart golf tourney
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy raised more than $50,000 at its annual golf tournament Oct. 11 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. The funds will go toward scholarships at the all-girls Catholic high school in La Cañada Flintridge.
The grand hole-in-one prize of the day was a 2010 Prius, sponsored by Mike Smith of Bob Smith Toyota. The tournament was followed by an auction and dinner, highlighted by a brief address from Barbara Johansing Buckley, a 1945 Sacred Heart alum and sister of tournament founder Harry G. Johansing Jr.
