The La Cañada High School cross-country teams scored an across-the-board sweep at the Rio Hondo League championship meet at the Lower Arroyo Park in Pasadena. The head coach was Tony Haynes.

Twenty Years Ago

A complaint against pornographic publications that filled 11 news racks in the city was filed by the La Cañada Junior Women’s Club. In response, City Hall officials sent a letter to the owner of the papers, citing a law that requires offensive materials to be covered in racks by a “blinder” that allows only the title to appear to passersby.

Thirty Years Ago

The Planning Commission was winding up 18 months of study on a proposal to develop a residential project in the vicinity of Normandy and Inverness drives. The original proposal by developer Michael Montgomery had called for 14 homes there, but had been whittled down to 12 and was poised for approval.

Forty Years Ago

In 1972, four years before cityhood, a two-month “campaign” period was launched in the search for an honorary mayor of La Cañada Flintridge by the local chamber of commerce. The candidates, nominated by their respective organizations, were Sue Clements, Rick Woodard, Chris Valente, Carl Geiseke, Rod Rodgers and Dr. William Pickering. Members of the community were invited to vote for their favorite candidates at area banks.

Fifty Years Ago

Sport Chalet was accepting reservations for a ski fashion show it was planning to stage at the La Cañada Country Club. The program was to include dinner and entertainment, including folk dancers and Disneyland yodeler Fred Burri.

Sixty Years Ago

A young pig named “Patricia Ann” was welcomed into the Earlmont Avenue household of the Mentz family. This little piggy went everywhere with Gerry Mentz, including the post office and the grocery store, and was usually dressed for these outings in a red ribbon tied in a bow at her neck. She was said to be the darling of the neighborhood children.
