Calendar: Hillgren scholarship deadline, USC media speech

Applications for a Mary Ellen Hillgren scholarship are due April 27, not April 12, as previously reported. Graduating seniors of La Cañada High School who reside within the city are invited to apply for one of two $1,000 scholarships administered by the Assistance League of Flintridge, a chapter of the National Assistance League.

The scholarships are intended to help meet the costs of attending a four-year college or university in the fall. Applications are available in the counseling office at LCHS or can be found online at www.alflintridge.org. The scholarships will be presented at the school’s Senior Awards Ceremony.

Along with their applications, students are asked to include a 200-word personal statement on the benefits received from involvement in extracurricular school activities, sports or community service.

Candidate will speak at dinner meeting

The La Cañada Flintridge Republican Club will host Gil Gonzales, a candidate for the state Senate, on Wednesday, April 25. Gonzales will speak at the organization’s 6:30 p.m. dinner meeting at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club, 5500 Godbey Drive.

Gonzales is the director of Public and Government Affairs Vons/Safeway.

Prior to this, he was the senior director for the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Economic and Business Policy. Gonzales entered California politics as legislative director for state Senator Bob Dutton.

Professor will speak on the media

Trojan Affiliates of USC, on Thursday, May 3, will present Thomas A. Hollihan, professor, USC Annenberg School for Communication, who will address “How the Media informs Voters.”

The meeting will be held at Beckham Grill, 77 W. Walnut Ave., Pasadena.

The social hour begins at 6 p.m., the dinner and address begin at 6:45 p.m.

Prospective members of Trojan Affiliates are welcome. Cost for the dinner meeting ranges from $25-$42.

Terry Walker to be honored on May 2

Reservations are being accepted now for the gala luncheon that will honor Terry Walker as La Cañadan of the Year. The event will be held at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2 in Van de Kamp Hall at Descanso Gardens.

Walker, a former vice president and director of human resources at the Allen Lund Co., in La Cañada Flintridge and a three-term president of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and Community Assn., is being honored for her broad base of volunteer activities over the 31 years she has lived in the city.

Today she is practice manager at La Cañada Pet Clinic, operated by her husband, veterinarian Woody Walker.

Sons of Norway plan cultural evening

Sons of Norway Edvard Grieg Lodge #74 will hold a potluck dinner and cultural evening on Saturday, April 28.

The event will take place at Lutheran Church in the Foothills, 1700 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada.
