La Cañada History: Wand children featured in Valley Sun for 1963 Valentine’s Day

Ten Years Ago

La Cañada Flintridge resident Bernice Hardman celebrated her 100th birthday with a number of parties, large and small, around town.

Asked for any longevity secrets she might pass along, she said she had none.

But she also mentioned that while she had tried taking afternoon naps, they just didn’t appeal to her as much as outdoor walks did.

Twenty Years Ago

The La Cañada High School boys’ varsity basketball team clinched an unprecedented sixth consecutive Rio Hondo League championship.

“The credit goes to the kids,” Coach Tom Hofman said.

Thirty Years Ago

Members of the student Garden Club at Oak Grove School learned they would receive a $500 grant from the Pasadena chapter of the American Red Cross to be used to beautify their school site.

Forty Years Ago

Students at La Cañada High School initiated a campaign to allow designated smoking areas on campus.

School board members were told that such a serious smoking problem existed in the school’s restrooms that students dreaded using them.

Fifty Years Ago

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wand, 5-year-old Mary Ellen and Bobby, 3, were featured on the cover of the Valley Sun for its 1963 Valentine’s Day issue.

Mary Ellen was giving her little brother a kiss in the spirit of the holiday.

The Wand family made their home in the 400 block of Paulette Place.

Sixty Years Ago

La Cañada’s first Bluebird troop, the junior division of Camp Fire Girls (the organization that today is named Camp Fire USA), marked its first birthday with a party organized by the troop leaders, Mrs. Charles Scott and Mrs. Alexander Smith.
