Four Boy Scouts join the ranks of Eagle Scout
Four local Boy Scouts have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and will receive their awards at a Court of Honor Jan. 4. They are Paul Broberg, Spencer Lunt, Jeffrey Malmrose and Ethan Walch. Broberg is a member of Troop 398, associated with the La Cañada First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, while the other three are members of Troop 391, sponsored by the Verdugo Hills Ward of the LDS church.
Paul Broberg, a ninth-grade student at La Cañada High School, has served as Patrol Leader and has earned 34 merit badges. He has camped extensively, participated in rock climbing and qualified as a member of the dime club in rifle shooting at Camp Kern.
For his Eagle Project, Paul led a group of 30 Scouts and adults in clearing and constructing two picnic tables at his school.
Spencer Lunt, 14, has been involved in Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting since he was 8. He earned the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting. In Boy Scouts, he has earned 24 merit badges and has served in a number of leadership positions.
In satisfying the requirements for the Eagle Scout rank, Spencer directed the restoration and replanting of flower beds at La Crescenta Elementary School. He is in the eighth grade at Rosemont Junior High School.
Jeffrey Malmrose, a 14-year-old freshman at Crescenta Valley High School, started his Scouting career in Pack 391, earning his Arrow of Light prior to joining Troop 391. He has served as Senior Patrol Leader, and Troop Bugler. In qualifying for the rank of Eagle, Jeffrey earned 28 merit badges.
Jeffrey’s Eagle Scout Project consisted of rebuilding and filling grow boxes at Tierra del Sol School in Sun Valley, enabling the special-needs students to plant and cultivate gardens. He also supervised the sanding and painting of park benches and the building of animal cages on the school’s campus.
Ethan Walch joined the Cub Scouts at the age of 8. Since becoming a Boy Scout, a few years later, he has earned 25 merit badges.
Now 14, he has served in a number of leadership positions in Troop 391, including Senior Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Chaplain’s Aide.
Ethan did his Eagle Scout project for Club 21, a nonprofit learning and resource center in Pasadena that provides assistance to people with Down Syndrome and their families. Ethan wanted to do a project for Club 21 because he has a new baby sister who has Down Syndrome. For his project, he directed a group of Scouts and adults in building, painting, and installing several shelves that now hold teaching equipment and supplies, providing more floor space for the children to play and learn at the facility.
Ethan attends Crescenta Valley High School, where he is a freshman.
