Atwater named to SoCal water board

The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) announced last week the appointment of Foothill Municipal Water District (FMWD) Director Richard Atwater to its Southern California Board of Directors. Atwater replaces James Edwards, who served as a FMWD representative to the board for 15 years before resigning.

In his new capacity, Atwater will vote on water issues affecting MWD and the 19 million customers who live in its six-county service area. He plans to focus on maintaining a reliable water supply in the face of the current statewide drought

“I look forward to working with other regional leaders on initiatives to drought-proof our region through increased conservation, storm-water capture and recycled water development,” Atwater stated in a release. “[And] I look forward to discussing our water issues and receiving recommendations from constituents as we work together to address this historic drought crisis.”

Atwater currently sits as executive director of the Southern California Water Committee. He has also served as CEO and general manager of the Inland Empire Utilities Agency and manager of the Water Resources Division of MWD, and will bring his 35 years of experience in government and water resources management to bear on the Board of Directors.

FMWD currently provides importer water to seven retail districts, including the Crescenta Valley Water District and the La Cañada Irrigation District.
