Coordinating Council installs officers

Von Karman Auditorium at JPL was the setting May 14 when the La Cañada Flintridge Coordinating Council held this year’s Les Tupper Community Service Awards ceremony.

Those presented the awards were Barbara Weber and Randy Strapazon for their individual, broad-based volunteer activities; La Cañada High students Kathryn Battaglia and Alex Keledjian; Jack Johnson, representing the La Cañada Baseball-Softball Assn. and Susan Azad, representing the Flintridge Riding Club.

The evening also included the installation of officers. Stepping off the board this year is Brian Hummel, while new to the board is Nick Berkuta. Others serving with President Sheree Butts as board members for the coming year are Joyce Ruygrok, Martha Burns, Lynda Gordon, Becky Gelhaar, Carl Christiansen, Jeb Long, Irene Mendon, Joe Thompson, Chuck Sambar and Clyde Hemphill.

Tea party organizer to speak

Mike Munzing, a tea party organizer, will address the La Crescenta Valley Republican Women Federated during the organization’s luncheon meeting planned for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 14. The event will be held at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club, 5500 Godbey Drive.

Benefit horse show, dinner planned

Move a Child Higher, known as MACH 1, will be holding its 15th annual Musical Horse Show and Benefit Dinner, “Don’t Fence Me In,” on Saturday, June 9 at the Flintridge Riding Club, 4625 Oak Grove Drive.

MACH 1 is a therapeutic horseback-riding program for disabled young riders. It is based in Hahamongna Watershed Park and relies on private contributions and the work of volunteers. Joy Rittenhouse, director of MACH 1, says that her students look forward to riding in this show, where blue ribbons will be awarded.

The horse show will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is free and open to the public. A silent auction will begin at 2 p.m. Dinner by Captain BBQ will be served following the horse show. 11 are honored as ‘Terrific Kids’

The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada last week honored 11 sixth-graders as “Terrific Kids.” The recommendations for the recognition came from teachers at La Cañada and Palm Crest elementary schools. Those named for the honor were Thomas Huh, Haig Manoukian, Madeline Reilly, Nicole Alexander, Saira Singh, Alan Kim, Jaden Efting, Karina Myszkowski, Anthony Crahan, Reagan Meyers, Leah Nagle and Cheyeene Garcia.

The students and their parents attended a special luncheon held at Van de Kamp Hall in Descanso Gardens. Following their awards ceremony, there was a special presentation by Tyler Wright, president of the Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA.

Hospital golf tourney set to tee off

Verdugo Hills Hospital will hold its 21st Annual Golf Classic Tournament on Monday, June 4, at Valencia Country Club. Funds raised will be earmarked for the purchase of capital equipment.

Dr. Ron Woodard is chairing the tournament with help from co-chairs Sue Wilder and Betty Hurn. Also involved are Paul Celuch, Yulanda Davis-Quarrie, Dave Elliott, John Genovese, Judy Hurst, Kate Kaneko, Len LaBella, Marian McCann, Dr. John Osterkamp, Dr. Terre Osterkamp, Kevin Tsujihara, Steve White and Steve Wilder.

Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Tee-off time is 10 a.m.
