La Cañada City Council makes appointments
On Monday, members of the La Cañada Flintridge City Council filled 22 vacancies on various city commissions and committees, selecting from among 50 aspiring applicants.
The candidates were interviewed by City Council members, who publicly voted on the appointments Monday at their regular meeting.
Appointed to the Planning Commission were Arun Jain, Thomas Smith and incumbent Richard Gunter III; named to the Public Safety Commission were Incumbents Thomas Schaefer and Joel Smith, as well as newly appointed Marilyn Smith (no relation).
Incumbents Allen Koblin and Jeff Olson retained seats on the Parks and Recreation Commission, with James Kambe joining the group; newly appointed to the Design Commission were Miriam Balcazar and Theresa King, who will serve alongside incumbent Jon Moldafsky.
Vacancies on the Public Works and Traffic Committee will be filled by Daniel Drugan, Charles Gelhaar and incumbent Clyde Hemphill. A partial, two-year opening on that committee will be filled by Robert Wallace.
Meanwhile, three incumbents — Gene Stein, Charles Thuss and Kevin Tom — will resume their service on the Investment and Financing Advisory Committee.
Commission and committee members serve four-year full terms, and receive a small stipend for their service. Members are limited to two consecutive terms.
Additionally, six local students vied for three open seats on the Youth Council, with Vivian Kambe, Jillian Pih and incumbent Christine Lee receiving the most votes on Monday. Those candidates must be between 14 and 19 years old during their two year terms of service.
According to a previous City Council decision, four of the Youth Council’s nine seats will be filled this year with representatives from each of the city’s high schools. Those members will be selected by each school site, with criteria provided by Council guiding the process.
“I want to thank all the current commissioners and the new commissioners, and everyone who applied,” Mayor Mike Davitt said Monday after the vote. “We really appreciate everyone’s efforts.”
