The city of La Cañada Flintridge is editing its local filming ordinance, most recently discussing the matter with stakeholders Monday in a Public Safety Commission meeting.
Administrative staff, in an attempt to accommodate concerned citizens, pro-filming advocates and the production companies themselves, are refining the ordinance last drafted nearly 20 years ago. That language delineates the process by which production companies must seek permission to film in public and residential areas and notify homeowners after approval.
Local filming occurs most frequently at Descanso Gardens and along the southernmost section of Commonwealth Avenue, where some homeowners have decried the inconvenience, according to Kevin Chun, the city’s director of administrative services.
“Changes to the ordinance would be applied citywide, so we wanted to make sure we weren’t making changes just to address a specific area,” Chun said.
Last year, the city approved 83 permits, receiving $48,670. In 2012 and 2011, La Cañada approved 45 and 46 permits, respectively, according to the City Manager’s Annual Report for 2013.
Monday’s meeting was one in a series of conversations among interested parties, who made recommendations for further revisions on both sides of the argument. Chun said staff will bring the issue back to the Public Safety Commission most likely in April.
