La Cañada History: Vons employees went on strike

Ten Years Ago

The Vons and Ralphs supermarkets in La Cañada were among 850 stores in the state impacted by the Southern California grocery workers’ strike. Picketers stood outside both locations asking customers not to shop there for the duration. The strike was resolved by a settlement in February 2004.

Twenty Years Ago

Ray Dilbeck used scissors to cut the traditional red ribbon, officially opening the new Keeler Dilbeck Realtors building at 1030 Foothill Boulevard. The building’s architect, Millard Archuleta, and city dignitaries were among the guests invited to the ceremony. “It is truly a dream come true,” said Dilbeck, who was chief executive of the company.

Thirty Years Ago

It was estimated that approximately 18% of La Cañada Flintridge students attended private or parochial schools, according to a 1983 study of trends in private school enrollment by the publication “Education Week.”

Forty Years Ago

Fifteen La Cañada High School varsity football players were suspended for drinking alcohol in October 1973. Five starters were removed from the squad for the entire season; the remaining 10 were suspended for two weeks.

Fifty Years Ago

Although its uniforms had not yet arrived, the La Cañada High School Marching Band made its first public appearance at the LCHS/Temple City football game just weeks after La Cañada’s high school campus opened.

Sixty Years Ago

According to the local sheriff’s station, a number of young La Cañadans were involved in curfew violations. Sgt. A.M. McDaniel reminded the community that “no one under 18 can be out after 10 p.m. unless accompanied by his parents or by a person over 21 who is his legal guardian.”
