LCF Planning board to discuss digital signs

Members of the La Cañada Flintridge Planning Commission will discuss Tuesday a draft ordinance that would allow electronic message centers on certain private school properties along Foothill Boulevard.

The matter first came before the council in July 2012, when representatives of St. Francis High School expressed their desire to replace their analog signboard with a digital display larger in area than the 4-square-foot maximum imposed by the city’s current sign ordinance.

Although the Planning Commission and the Design Commission both rejected the terms of the request, a council subcommittee came to a different determination — that school properties of more than three acres on Foothill Boulevard, east of the 210 Freeway with enrollments exceeding 400 students should be eligible for the electronic signs.

In a May 19 meeting, after a heated discussion, members of the City Council asked the Planning Commission to compile further recommendations in a draft ordinance before bringing the issue back to the council for a vote.
