LCHS hosts male beauty pageant
In the interest of gender equality, 10 male students at La Cañada High School vied for the title of “Mr. La Cañada” Friday night during a first-ever male beauty pageant hosted by the school’s Associated Student Body.
Competitors participated in a Q&A portion, a dance number, talent competition and a swimsuit competition, according to ASB adviser Bill Lively.
“I told them there have to be tops, and no Speedos,” Lively said in an earlier interview.

Admission was free this year, although members of the LCHS Bridge program, a peer counseling group, solicited donations for a Monday head-shaving event to raise money for pediatric cancer research through the nonprofit St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
The contestants’ efforts were evaluated by three judges: history teacher Brent Beaty, football coach Ramsey Lambert and calculus teacher Bence Szamosfalvi.
Students Kylie Brakeman and Nora Sagal emceed the event, with Reed Buck acting as onstage assistant in an evening gown and tiara.
At the end of the evening, senior and Bridge student Griffin Van Amringe won the coveted crown and took a moment to sum up his feelings.
“It was the singly most amazing moment of my life,” he laughed. “In all seriousness, though, I had a great time with the other guys, and it’s awesome that we raised money for St. Baldrick’s.”
