La Cañada High School was recently recognized by the National Assn. of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation as one of 96 schools in the nation that set the bar for offering students access to a comprehensive music education program.

It was announced late last month that the school will receive a 2014 SupportMusic Merit Award, part of the annual Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) Program, which also recognizes school districts.

“These schools and districts make a strong commitment to music education in the core curriculum supporting its essential value to a well-rounded education for every child,” Mary Luehrsen, NAMM Foundation executive director, said in a statement. “The [awards] bring a hard-won visibility to music classes, programs and departments that are keeping music education alive in our schools.”

For the past 15 years, the BCME program has evaluated schools and districts based on funding, teacher quality, commitment to standards and access to music instruction. It is part of the group’s efforts to bolster support for school-based music education programs for all students.

This year, more than 2,000 schools and districts participated in the group’s survey. For more, visit www.nammfoundation.org.
