Where Nithya Raman won
Urban planner Nithya Raman defeated Los Angeles City Councilman David Ryu last week, making her the first challenger to unseat an incumbent in 17 years.

A look at preliminary block-by-block results shows how Raman built a winning coalition in Council District 4, an unusually shaped jurisdiction that straddles Hollywood Hills and covers parts of San Fernando Valley and the L.A. Basin.
Raman's strongest support came from the east side of the district in dense neighborhoods of Los Feliz and Hollywood. She also claimed 58% of the votes in precincts where most households make less than $60,000 a year.
Ryu, who became the first Korean American member of the council in 2015, won the precincts where Asian Americans make up the largest share of the population. He also found strong support from high-income areas in Hancock Park and Hollywood Hills, but not enough to hold his seat.
