La Cañada History: Flintridge Prep dedicates new outdoor swimming pool

A judge ruled that a La Cañada Flintridge man would not be held liable for more than $200,000 in medical bills and other costs incurred by a La Cañada High school graduate who was shot in the jaw after a fight broke out at a 2003 post-prom party at the man’s home.
Twenty Years Ago
Two self-employed tree trimmers working at different sites in La Cañada over a weekend in February 1995 were electrocuted on successive days. Each of the victims had been using a pruning pole to try to sweep a fallen branch off of a high-voltage line.

A large marquee sign that stood for more than 30 years on Foothill Boulevard near Cornishon Avenue and had since 1963 carried announcements for Foothill Intermediate School — and La Cañada Junior High School before it — was removed as part of a conditional use permit when La Cañada Unified School District sought to lease out the closed campus to private schools.

By triggering fire alarms, vandals interrupted a February 1975 town meeting at La Cañada High School that featured the candidates in an upcoming school board race.It was reported that the 200-member audience and five candidates were forced to evacuate the meeting about 15 minutes before it had been scheduled to end.
Fifty Years Ago
Flintridge Preparatory School for Boys, as it was then known, on Feb. 28, 1965 dedicated its new outdoor swimming pool. Earle Jorgensen, president of Jorgensen Steel, donated funds for the pool’s construction and was there to celebrate its opening. Also participating were Olympic swimmers and divers, including Sharon Stouder, Cathy Ferguson, Jeanne Hallock and Larry Andreason.
Sixty Years Ago
Descanso Gardens celebrated it inaugural Camellia Festival in 1955 and the event attracted crowds far beyond expectations, reported John Threlkeld, then superintendent of Descanso.
