Sport Chalet building takes shape in 2002

The new corporate office building for Sport Chalet, Inc. was taking shape in the summer of 2002. About 100 employees were expected to move into the 27,000-square-foot building in the fall of the same year.

La Cañada Flintridge real estate executive Ray Dilbeck announced plans to construct his corporate and sales office at the southwest corner of Foothill Boulevard and Chevy Chase Drive. It was estimated that the new building would be ready for occupancy in the summer of 1993.

Linda Vine, a part-time local businesswoman, was appointed as a provisional member of the La Cañada school board to complete the unexpired term of Carole Siegler, whose family was relocating to Saratoga, Calif.

Forty Years Ago

According to a joint report issued in July 1972 by the county Regional Planning Commission and the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the median income in La Cañada and Flintridge combined (then an unincorporated area, as cityhood was still four years away) was $20,300. This was a jump of 31.2% since 1960. In all of the San Gabriel Valley, only San Marino, with a median family income of $25,075, outstripped the La Cañada-Flintridge area.

Fifty Years Ago

A fire that started in the kitchen destroyed a one-story home in the 4100 block of Forest Hill Drive. No one was at home when the blaze broke out. Damages were set at $65,000.

Sixty Years Ago

Calls flooded into the Valley Sun office on the morning of July 21, 1952, seeking information about an earthquake that rocked La Cañada homes shortly before 5 a.m. that day. It turned out the callers had felt the Kern County earthquake, a 7.3 temblor that claimed the lives of 12. It was reported to have been the largest earthquake in California since the 1906 San Francisco event.
