The new outdoor science lab and activities center at La Cañada Elementary School was officially opened during a special ceremony attended by school officials, parents and students. The $290,000 facility was a parent-driven project paid for entirely by donations.

Calvary Chapel of the Foothills signed a lease to occupy 15,000 square feet of space within the TJ Maxx building at Plaza de La Cañada, formerly a Buffum’s department store. The building originally opened in the late 1960s as an Iver’s department store.

A Highland Park couple escaped serious injuries when their Jeep lost its brakes while descending Angeles Crest Highway near Foothill Boulevard. After striking a moving car, the Jeep overturned and caught fire in the intersection of the two thoroughfares.

The California Highway Patrol announced plans to beef up patrol of Knight Way between Gould and Crown avenues because, over a three-year period, it had become popular with young drivers as an illegal racing strip. The crackdown followed a 2:15 a.m. accident involving two cars that damaged residential properties in the 400 block of the street.

Members of the junior high school group known as the Debuteens held a fashion show at “Oakwood Acres,” the Hillcrest Avenue home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Kenneth Coates. The girls modeled back-to-school wardrobe items provided by Webb’s of Glendale.
