He was hairy, he needed a hip replacement, and he was missing a leg. But for $1, the Rottweiler named Bernie was giving out kisses to all comers during a fundraiser for the pet rescue organization Paw’d Squad during an appearance at the La Cañada Petco.

Twenty Years Ago

The La Cañada High School instrumental music department was preparing for its annual Chili Dinner to be held in the school gym, preceding a Spartan basketball game against Temple City. Organizers promised good food and nonstop musical performances for the bargain price of $5 per ticket.

Thirty Years Ago

La Cañada Flintridge resident Don Manning was named chief engineer and general manager of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Then 50, Manning had been a member of the department for 27 years before Mayor Tom Bradley named him the city’s fire chief.

Pitcher Don Sutton and baseball executive Arthur E. “ Red” Patterson represented the Los Angeles Dodgers when the La Cañada Junior Baseball Assn. held its 18th annual kick-off banquet at Brookside Clubhouse.

Fifty Years Ago

The Rev. Thomas Lahart, formerly of the St. Jane Frances de Chantal parish in North Hollywood, arrived in La Cañada to take over pastoral duties at St. Bede Church. He filled the position left vacant when Father John Paul Early died in November the previous year.

Sixty Years Ago

An Indiana Avenue resident was raking leaves in her front yard when a neighbor shouted to her, “Your house is on fire!” Unperturbed, Anna May Power, then 77, entered her home, gathered up a box of valuables and insurance papers, then crossed the street and watched from the front porch of a neighboring home while firefighters went to work saving her 1906 wood-framed structure. “I wasn’t worried,” Power told them later. “You were all over the place like ants.” Damage of $6,000 was reported.
