La Cañada History: Sport Chalet founder Norbert Olberz featured in ad for local retailer

With a game against Culver City ending in a 5-3 score, the La Cañada High School varsity ice hockey team, then in its second season, recorded its first-ever win.

20 Years Ago

The presentation of the third annual La Cañada Kiwanis International Bike Race, set for April 24, 1993, was approved by the La Cañada Flintridge City Council. The 1992 event raised $2,000 for the club, and it was hoped that the third competition would bring in more than twice that amount.

30 Years Ago

A $300,000 check from the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation was presented to the La Cañada school board by Sid Karsh, then president of the foundation. The funds represented 1982 contributions from nearly 1,000 community members. A goal of $400,000 was set for the 1983 campaign.

40 Years Ago

In the days before cityhood, St. Francis High School teacher and community volunteer Chris Valente was elected honorary mayor of La Cañada for a two-year period. Valente was nominated by the Youth House, where he was the executive director.

50 Years Ago

Norbert Olberz, founder of Sport Chalet, was featured in a full-page Valley Sun advertisement for La Cañada Poly Clean Center, which claimed the sporting goods retailer had dry-cleaned everything in the photo (except for the skis) for $2. It was one of a national award-winning series of ads for the dry cleaners that spotlighted local, well-known citizens.

60 Years Ago

Some 150 homeowners in “La Cañada Acres,” a development bounded by Commonwealth Avenue, Lynnhaven Lane, Princess Anne Road and Angeles Crest Highway signed a petition in January 1952 objecting to a large increase in property assessments, an average of 55% over the previous year. In the case of two properties within the area, the increase was 83%.
