La Cañada History: Community Carnival raised music program funds

Ten Years Ago

Noticing the mail was piling up at a residence on La Granada Way, a postman notified his supervisor that someone should check on the elderly woman who lived there. When deputies arrived, they found the 82-year-old lying on the floor of her garage, covered by various items, including a window, assorted debris and bags filled with groceries. From a dated receipt found in one of the grocery bags its was surmised she had slipped and fallen four days earlier. Semi-conscious when she was found, she was recuperating in a nearby hospital.

Twenty Years Ago

The 1993 Community Carnival held on the La Cañada High School campus raised approximately $20,000 to help fund performance tours, uniforms and instruments for the school’s music programs.

Thirty Years Ago

Verdugo Hills Hospital announced it would break ground in May 1983 for a $20 million construction-remodeling project that was expected to take about two years to complete.

Forty Years Ago

The local chamber of commerce in April 1973 learned from a representative of the county Board of Supervisors that plans were afoot to shut down Fire Station 28, located in the 1000 block of Inverness Drive, due to a $200,000 budget deficit. Flintridge homeowners were up in arms, saying such a closure would be disastrous because it would effectively eliminate protection for their homes.

Fifty Years Ago

The La Cañada Flintridge Newcomer Club held its “graduation exercises” for those members who had belonged to the group for more than two years and were no longer considered newcomers.

Sixty Years Ago

The local Camp Fire Girls Assn. was gearing up for its April launch of the annual fundraising sale of vacuum-packed circus peanuts. The youngest members of Camp Fire, the elementary-school-aged Bluebirds, would be calling on their neighbors to support the campaign. Funds raised would be earmarked for the completion of the new lodge at Camp Chiquita in Altadena.
