La Cañada History: St. Bede School hosted first public fundraiser

Ten Years Ago

A petition was circulating in the Rancho area near La Cañada High School by residents who wanted the city to install speed bumps along Alminar Avenue to calm traffic there.

Twenty Years Ago

Pat Nolan (R-Glendale), who served La Cañada Flintridge and other area communities in the state Assembly, was indicted on eight counts of alleged conspiracy, extortion, bribery, racketeering and money laundering following a five-year investigation by the FBI. Nolan later pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering and was sentenced to two years in prison, to be followed by six months in a halfway house.

Thirty Years Ago

With a victory over Temple City High School, La Cañada High School track coach Pat Logan in April 1983 marked the 100th dual meet his program had won over a 12-year period.

Forty Years Ago

It was reported that nearly 120 La Cañada students from elementary through high school levels signed up to play in the spring 1973 Teen Tennis Tournament, held on the courts at Foothill Intermediate School, La Cañada High School, Flintridge Prep and the La Cañada Country Club. The Assistance League of Flintridge sponsored the event.

Fifty Years Ago

Tickets were on sale for “Et Tu Brute,” a musical satire based on William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” to be presented May 17-18 in the junior high school’s auditorium by the La Cañada Fathers Council. Proceeds would be used to help finance the lighting of the athletic field at the new La Canada High School, which was scheduled to welcome its first students in the fall of 1963.

Sixty Years Ago

The first public event at La Cañada’s new parochial school, St. Bede School, was a spring fair to help raise money for the school’s building fund. “Eenie Meenie Minee Moe St. Bede’s Fair the place to go,” read a promotional poster.
