Several young women who graduated from high schools in La Cañada Flintridge were awarded scholarships from the Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic.

The Mary Ellen Gilstrap Memorial Scholarship, named after a longtime resident of Glendale and La Cañada Flintridge, honors ambitious women who are active in the community and graduated from a local high school. For the first time, the organization awarded two winners for the scholarship since it was created in 2006.

Rebecca Villalpando, who graduated from La Cañada High last month, plans to attend Tulane University to study English this fall. The second winner of the award, Katherine Chapman, is a graduate of La Cañada High and studies international relations and Spanish at the University of California, Davis.

Other scholarship winners from the organization included Kathryn Battaglia, Kara Lankey, both recent graduates of La Cañada High, and Erinn Quintana, a Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy graduate.
