La Cañada History: ‘Dames at Sea’ performed at Crescenta-Cañada YMCA

Ten Years Ago

The La Cañada school board learned that a survey of voters living within the boundaries of the La Cañada Unified School District showed that 73% of them would support a bond measure for facility upgrades on the local campuses. The consulting firm that conducted the survey recommended holding the bond election in March 2004 instead of holding it in November 2003, when it would be competing for attention with the special California gubernatorial recall election.

Twenty Years Ago

A dedication ceremony, followed by an open house, was held at the La Cañada ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose building on Foothill Boulevard had recently completed extensive remodeling. The local ward was first organized in 1949 and the updating project was undertaken in 1990.

Thirty Years Ago

The new, $7-million Plaza Verdugo Medical Center across the street from Verdugo Hills Hospital was completed and its developers were offering tours of the building to prospective owners. The building offered medical suites ranging in size from 1,000 square feet to a complete floor that totaled 12,500 square feet. For a limited time, physicians could purchase space from $199 per square foot.

Forty Years Ago

The La Cañada Theatre Assn. presented the musical “Dames at Sea” over two successive weekends at the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA. The director was Jo Ann Taylor.

Fifty Years Ago

A wave of summertime thefts in July 1963 involved the loss of four surfboards that had been left in three unlocked garages in La Cañada.

Sixty Years Ago

An effort to control Foothill Boulevard traffic at Cornishon Avenue, near La Cañada Junior High School, reportedly ended in failure when Assemblyman Frank D. Lanterman’s bill to install flashing signals there was vetoed by Governor Earl Warren.
