The Valley Line: Monster Bash celebrates the scream season
The Oakmont League of Glendale on Oct. 18 held a luncheon in the beautiful home of member Lynn Dittrick. Lynn’s home was festively decorated for the autumn season.
President Chris Halajian welcomed the 30 guests, including 10 past presidents. Luncheon was served in the garden. The dining tables were covered with royal purple cloths and adorned with colored autumn leaves.
Among the past presidents in attendance were Esther Bowen, Barbara McCullough, Liz Isenman, Nina Ratliff, Julie Budimir, Donna Sauer, Jeri Benton, Marlene Hirt, Gail Gilhooley and Judy Mendicina.

The city pulled out all the stops last Thursday eve when it hosted the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce mixer that carried the Monster Bash theme.
According to Pat Anderson, president of the chamber, a movie studio couldn’t have done any better at creating a spooky Halloween setting at Mayors’ Discovery Park, where the mixer was held. Mother Nature also added some of her own drama by creating some light fog, making the setting even more mysterious.
City Manager Mark Alexander dressed as Dracula to greet the guests — and I understand he was pretty convincing.
When guests entered the park they passed through a small haunted house tended to by chamber volunteer Jeanne Wallace and came out the other side into a graveyard, where figures rose from the ground and coffins were aplenty.
A murky green pond that was properly slimy for the occasion glowed in the dark and a skeleton sat at its edge fishing for ugly things floating about. Steaming dry ice in the pond made it even spookier.
A 10-foot-tall zombie stomped through the crowd of about 80 people in hopes of frightening everyone.
There were witches, ghouls, ghosts and other assorted Halloween characters haunting the mixer.
Mayor Laura Olhasso warmly welcomed the guests to their Halloween nightmare mixer. She then introduced council members Don Voss, Jon Curtis and Mike Davitt. She also introduced City Hall staffers and thanked them for their amazing work on putting this fun mixer together.
Bent Hansen, owner of Los Gringos Locos restaurant, provided the tasty and hearty food for the event with the help of his crew. It was a great menu for an autumn night as they served bread bowls filled with hot chili with what seemed like an endless array of toppers.
It was a great mixer that got everyone ready for Halloween night. Hope you are ready for trick-or-treaters that will be ringing your doorbell.
