La Cañada History: Academic Decathlon team won second place in L.A. area
Ten Years Ago
A memorial service was planned for George L. Parrish, the first mayor of La Cañada Flintridge upon its 1976 incorporation as a city. Parrish, who had moved to Orange County in his retirement, died in Irvine following an extended illness. On accepting the first mayoral position here, Parrish noted that nearly 3,000 La Cañadans had voted against cityhood because they feared a new layer of government and that the leaders of the new city would need to take that into consideration in their many deliberations.
Twenty Years Ago
Incumbents Jack Hastings and Joan Feehan filed papers and started their campaigns to keep their seats on the La Cañada Flintridge City Council in the spring 1994 election.
Thirty Years Ago
The La Cañada High School Academic Decathlon team won second place in competition among 40 high schools in the greater Los Angeles area. LCHS was second to Beverly Hills High, which went on to win first place at the state level of competition.
Forty Years Ago
Despite receiving nearly 10 inches of rainfall in a single storm in January 1974, La Cañada escaped with little serious damage. The U.S. Forest Service reported snowfall of up to 7 1/2 feet at the Buckhorn campground in the Angeles National Forest. Local snow enthusiasts reported they were frustrated that the Angeles Crest Highway had been closed due rock slides.
Fifty Years Ago
A petition movement designed to annex Flintridge to the city of Pasadena got underway with nine individuals working to collect signatures. This was a surprise development in the long, ongoing battle for La Cañada’s incorporation.
Sixty Years Ago
The Regional Planning Commission was asked to consider the application of the Flintridge Preparatory School for Boys, as it was then known, for a zoning exception that would allow the rebuilding and remodeling of its facilities. No difficulties were anticipated, as 45 property owners along Crown Avenue, Nancy Way and Foothill Boulevard surrounding the school had already expressed their support of the project.
