Ten Years Ago

Falling just short of receiving the two-thirds vote required, La Cañada Unified School District’s Measure P for a three-year, $400 parcel tax, failed at the polls. Andy Beattie, then president of the school board, said the loss was a “huge disappointment” and that district personnel would have to be laid off as a result.

Twenty Years Ago

On being advised that La Cañada school board member Carole Siegler planned to move out of the area, her colleagues on the board decided not to hold a $25,000 election but to seek a replacement who would be willing to serve out the remainder of her term.

Thirty Years Ago

Dr. Thomas Noguchi, who had served as chief medical-examiner-coroner for the county of Los Angeles, was the featured presenter of a series of authentic Japanese cuisine classes held in the demonstration kitchen at La Cocina on Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada. Noguchi had become well-known for performing autopsies on actresses Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Tate and Natalie Wood as well as Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

Forty Years Ago

Approximately 250 people turned out for the dedication ceremony of the new Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station on Briggs Avenue in La Crescenta. Formerly the local bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was housed in Montrose.

Fifty Years Ago

Jack Samuelson was tapped as the Kiwanis Club’s La Cañadan of the Year and was honored for his many civic involvements at a luncheon held at the La Cañada Country Club in early 1964.

Sixty Years Ago

Tragedy struck the annual winter camp of La Cañada Boy Scouts when 14-year-old Life Scout Richard Beresford of Indianola Way was fatally injured in a sledding accident on the slopes of Mt. Baldy. The ninth-grade student at La Cañada Junior High reportedly was alone on a sled when it crashed first into a rock and then a tree. He succumbed to his injuries at Mt. San Antonio Hospital in Upland.
