Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Alice C. Hill, a resident of La Cañada Flintridge, was named the 2004 Judge of the Year by the San Fernando Valley Bar Assn.

Twenty Years Ago

Mary Brosius was named rose curator for Descanso Gardens' new $1.5-million International Rosarium, which was set to be dedicated on May 14, 1994.

Thirty Years Ago

The Los Angeles Olympic committee announced La Cañada Flintridge resident Dr. Val Clark, then 51, would be the California director of the Olympic Boardsailing Exhibition for the XXIII Summer Olympiad in Los Angeles.

Forty Years Ago

The fad of streaking came to La Cañada in March 1974, with a couple of incidents that caught people's eyes. In the first, a man was reported to have been streaking through the Albertson's market on the 2200 block of Foothill Boulevard at 8:30 p.m. one Saturday. In the second, a couple of teens stepped out of the LCHS gym unclothed to streak across campus. They were quickly stopped by security personnel and escorted to the principal's office.

Fifty Years Ago

Two concrete sculptures of lion heads mounted on natural stone pillars that had guarded the entrance to Lyans Drive from Palm Drive for 42 years were taken down after a Palm Crest Elementary School PTA committee said they were blocking motorists' views. The monuments were relocated to a corner of the garden belonging to Robert T. Lyans, whose father was the pioneer developer of the area.

Sixty Years Ago

Don Mike Anthony of La Cañada, then 15, was preparing for the 1954 U.S. Figure Skating Championships to be held for the first time in Los Angeles, at the Polar Palace. The 10th-grade student at La Cañada Junior High lived with his family on Salisbury Road. In 1953 he was the Pacific Coast Junior Men's Figure Skating champion.
