Longtime La Cañadan Martha Burns, who in previous years has been honored locally for her deep involvement in community affairs, was recognized in March by Rep. Adam Schiff as one of the women of the year for California’s 28th Congressional District.

Burns was feted at a luncheon held in Hollywood, where Schiff entered a special tribute to her into the Congressional Record. Also so honored were a dozen other women from Schiff’s district: Alexandra Helfrich, Burbank; Alice Steere Coulombe, Pasadena; Barbara Ferris, Los Feliz; Blaire Lennane, Elysian Valley; Cheryl Davis, La Crescenta; Christy Schilling, Glendale; Drian Juarez, Hollywood; Nadine Trujillo, Silver Lake; Elizabeth Garo, Echo Park; Ruth Williams, West Hollywood; Shelli-Anne Couch, Atwater Village and Sonia Tatulian, Tujunga.

“It was an honor and a pleasure to meet with the 2014 ‘Women of the Year’ awardees, and to recognize their outstanding work and community leadership,” Schiff stated in a news release.

Burns, a native of Minnesota, has lived in La Cañada Flintridge since 1981. Since arriving here, she has been active in the Newcomers Club, La Cañada Junior Women’s Club, local PTAs, as an adult leader in Camp Fire, Cub Scouts, AYSO and La Cañada Junior Baseball/Softball.

Ms. Burns was born and raised in Minnesota. She obtained her degree in Mathematics from Colorado College, where she joined Kappa Alpha Theta, a sorority she continues to be active in. After graduation, she worked as a Financial Analyst at General Mills in Minneapolis. Seven years later, she moved back to Colorado Springs, where she met and married Tom Burns while both were working for Burroughs Corp. In 1979, a job transfer moved the family to Glendale, and in 1981 they purchased a home in La Cañada Flintridge. Ms. Burns wasted no time in joining the La Cañada Flintridge Newcomers Club and the La Cañada Junior Women’s Club. Other involvements include Assistance League of Flintridge, La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation, the local chamber of commerce and La Cañada Kiwanis Club-AM. A pet lover, she has volunteered for Recycled Pets Rescue and the Pasadena Humane Society.
