La Cañada History: Prince Andrew of England visits La Cañada Flintridge

Ten Years Ago

The 40th annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design, featuring a Georgian-style estate in Flintridge, opened its doors to the public. The 10,000-square-foot home had been built in the early days of Flintridge by architect Myron Hunt. About 50,000 visitors were expected to tour the property during the monthlong event.

Twenty Years Ago

Neal and Molly Brockmeyer were honored by the La Cañada Kiwanis Club as La Cañadans of the Year.

Thirty Years Ago

Prince Andrew of England’s royal family paid a visit to La Cañada Flintridge, touring the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on April 19, 1984. His older brother, Prince Charles, had visited the lab in 1977.

Forty Years Ago

A survey of community members undertaken in April 1974 by the La Cañada Chamber of Commerce showed that locals were interested in seeing the town incorporate as a city, there was a strong desire for the installation of sewer systems and there was a perceived need for more public tennis courts. However, a majority of the survey’s returns from the western section of town, from Rosebank Drive to Ocean View Boulevard (in more recent years known as the Sagebrush area), indicated property owners there wanted to be left out of any La Cañada incorporation plans.

Fifty Years Ago

La Cañadans and various dignitaries from the Southland gathered on a Sunday afternoon in April 1964 for a formal dedication of the La Cañada Unified School District and all of its school sites, including the new, $3 million La Cañada High School.

Sixty Years Ago

In the “Rancho Roundup,” a Valley Sun column devoted to families residing in the northeastern portion of La Cañada known as the Rancho, Audrey Robesky wrote that during Easter week 1954 the Flintridge Reelers, a square-dancing group, held a dance at the Thursday Club with Benny Mathews calling. In other Rancho news, the Darn Club, a group of neighbors who met regularly to accomplish sewing chores such as sock darning, held a picnic at Griffith Park with their children.
