Gabby Giancola, a senior at La Cañada High School, has been working for the past year on her Girl Scouts Gold Award project, which revolves around computer programming, “especially empowering young women to join or develop an interest for the field,” she said.
In September, Giancola organized a one-day basic introduction to computer programming at the Pasadena YMCA’s new location in Sierra Madre. She was assisted by her project mentor, Jessica Rhee and Pete Elmore, both affiliated with the company Reversal Lab.
“The girls learned HTML, CSS and Java script to create a personalized website,” Giancola said, adding that the Y’s manager expressed interest in continuing the classes there.
