Fifth-graders add color to Thanksgiving in Valley Sun art contest

Share

Since the 1950s, the La Cañada Valley Sun has invited all local fifth-grade students who are studying America's first Thanksgiving celebration in school to participate in an art contest. Some of our longtime readers might recall that in the first few decades of the contest, when the newspaper was printed in black and white only, the drawings were executed in black ink on white paper. As the publication evolved over the years, the ability to scan and print submissions in full color shifted the contest rules accordingly and today's entries are now exuberantly colorful.

The 10- and 11-year-old participants in the Thanksgiving Art Contest amaze and sometimes amuse the judging staff with their skills and unique looks at Thanksgiving in America, the theme for the competition. This year's overall winning entry, drawn and colored by La Cañada Elementary School student Elie Kim, charmed us with its look at a smiling family and their beloved dog (perhaps named "Spot") anticipating their first bites of the feast set out before them. Our warmest congratulations to Elie, and Happy Thanksgiving to all!
