Thursday Club awards scholarships to area students

Thirteen seniors from four local high schools were awarded $1,000 each in scholarships from the La Cañada Thursday Club during the organization’s recent tea meeting.
The awardees include Catherine Cea (LCHS), Lacy Coan (Flintridge Prep), Grant Haxton (LCHS), Matt Olsen (LCHS), Scott Platisa (LCHS), Kaitlin Powers (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy), Kate Schiller (Mayfield Senior School), Sarah Sellman (LCHS), Caroline “Carrie” Smith (LCHS), Freya Strasburg (LCHS), Erika Weiler (LCHS), Margaret “Maggie” Barron (LCHS) and Leo Neat (LCHS).
Announcing the winners was Scholarship Chairwoman Sharon Combs. The requirement for earning a Thursday Club scholarship includes GPA, SAT or ACT scores, an essay, community service, interview in front of the scholarship committee and list of references.
“All the winners proved their academic success, enthusiasm for community service and potential to succeed and make a difference in the world,” stated Combs. “This is the largest dollar amount the Thursday Club has ever awarded.”
Catherine Cea will be attending UC Santa Barbara and hopes to become a high school teacher. Lacy Coan will be at College of William and Mary in the fall, majoring in international relations. Grant Haxton will attend the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a major in history or political science.
Matt Olsen will attend UC Davis majoring in business/accounting. Scott Platisa is looking forward to attending SMU, where he plans to major in business. Kaitlin Powers is a senior at Flintridge Sacred Heart and will be attending Notre Dame in the fall, majoring in environmental science.
Kate Schiller will be at Bates College in Maine this fall. She plans to major in history and work in education. Sarah Sellman will attend Vanderbilt University, majoring in communications, international relations or music. Caroline “Carrie” Smith will major in film at the Chapman University, Dodge College Film and Media Arts.
Freya Strasburg will attend Wesleyan University and major in political science and aspires to attend Harvard Law School. Erika Weiler will soon be at Loyola Marymount University to major in business and health sciences.
Two students were awarded the Greenawalt Scholarship: Maggie Barron, who will attend University of Arizona, majoring in retail and consumer science; and Leo Neat, who is headed to UC Santa Cruz, where he plans to major in computer science and work as a computer programmer or in cyber security.
