La Cañada History: Clowns, cakewalks, carnival rides entice Paradise Canyon kids to 1960 Mardi Gras

Ten Years Ago
Responding to increased demand, the city of La Cañada Flintridge placed a second shuttle bus in service along Foothill Boulevard during its most heavily trafficked periods. The $403,000 compressed natural gas shuttle was paid for with city revenue generated by Proposition A, a half-cent county sales tax.

Twenty Years Ago
Cold winter storms passed through the Southland 20 years ago this week, bringing high winds, 4.89 inches of rain and some hail to La Cañada, along with a dusting of snow on the San Gabriel Mountains.

The La Cañada Flintridge Country Club announced Bill Reinhard had been elected president of the club’s Men’s Golf Assn. At the time of his election, Reinhard also coached the LCFCC swim team and had been coach and athletic director at Glendale Community College for 25 years.

Forty Years Ago
A series of storms dumped 15.21 inches of rain on La Cañada over a weeklong period in February 1980. Particularly hard hit was the Flintridge area, where mudslides and road washouts occurred. Also taking a big hit were cars parked in the 400 block of Paulette Place, where a debris basin on the LCF Country Club golf course overflowed. It was reported that an additional six storms were lined up over the Pacific Ocean, ready to advance on the area.

Fifty Years Ago
The La Cañada school board voted to include an orchestra pit in the auditorium of the La Cañada High School fine arts building that was then under construction. The cost of the addition, which would require the deletion of 42 theater seats, was $1,920.

The Paradise Canyon Elementary School PTA was preparing for its major fundraiser of the year, the Mardi Gras Carnival, planned for Feb. 27, 1960 on the Knight Way campus.
