Ten Years Ago

The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada presented the first Los Angeles Foothills Soap Box Derby on the “Michigan Hill,” the steep slope at the eastern end of Foothill Boulevard next to St. Francis High School. The hill earned its name from the fact that Foothill Boulevard was originally called Michigan Avenue. Ed Moulton was derby director.

Twenty Years Ago

A cast of 46 La Cañada High School students was announced for “Fiddler on the Roof,” to be performed in the school auditorium in June 1990. The role of Tevye was to be played by senior Tony Lipp.

Thirty Years Ago

A year after shutting down two of the La Cañada public schools and asking the community to donate money to help keep the existing programs going, district officials sent letters to parents notifying them that if they wanted to take advantage of school bus transportation in 1980-81 it would cost them $500 per student.

Forty Years Ago

At the age of 77, La Cañada resident Frances MacIver packed her bags to fulfill a lifelong dream to serve as a missionary. She accompanied the family of Presbyterian minister the Rev. William Grubb to take on her first assignment, in Korea.

Fifty Years Ago

In keeping with a tradition that was then 41 years old, American flags were raised near two deodar trees planted on La Cañada Elementary School grounds in honor of Willard Barnum and Howard McMullin, who died in military service during World War I.
