Competing for Peru in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow was La Cañada Flintridge swimmer Celeste Garcia, 15, who had just completed her freshman year at LCHS.

Forty Years Ago

Film actor Patric Knowles was the special guest when the La Cañada Youth House (today the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge) held a benefit premiere of “Chisum,” John Wayne’s latest film, at the Montrose Theatre on Honolulu Avenue. Knowles played one of the film’s leading roles. The showing was followed by a Wild West-themed party.

Fifty Years Ago

The state Division of Highways and Los Angeles County Flood Control District were coordinating plans to widen Angeles Crest Highway from two to four lanes and increasing the public right of way. This meant the yards of a number of property owners, especially on the west side of the highway, would be reduced. Along the east side, a storm drain was to be installed between Foothill Boulevard and Vista del Valle.
