Foothills resident Mary Pinola was named a “Dodger Hero” by the Los Angeles Dodgers in pre-game ceremonies. She was given the honor for her volunteer activities, including serving on a committee that raised funds for stadium seating at CV High School and handling community relations for Verdugo Hills Hospital.

Thirty Years Ago

Assessed valuation in La Cañada Flintridge rose by more than $14 million (10.2%) to $155,239,673, according to Alexander Pope, then-assessor of Los Angeles County.

Forty Years Ago

Four marijuana plants found growing near Chula Senda Lane were pulled out of the ground and reported to the local sheriff’s station by a 13-year-old Flintridge boy. Earlier the same month a resident of Olive Lane notified authorities that he had found 54 marijuana plants, some of them in flats, growing behind his backyard.

Fifty Years Ago

As part of the Fulbright international educational exchange program, an elementary school teacher from Scotland, Maureen Graham, was on her way to La Cañada where she would be assigned to a second-grade class at Oak Grove School. As part of the exchange, La Cañada teacher Eleanor Sanford would travel to Scotland to tutor for the 1960-61 school year.
