The Valley Line: Hamburger Night draws Rose float supporters

It’s hard to believe that summer has come to an end. Kids are back in school and philanthropic clubs are gearing up for busy projects ahead.

Weather-wise we had a mixed bag of temps that certainly did keep us off balance — a few days of three-digit temps and then foggy, overcast days that were definitely considered cold. Yes, the summer of 2010 will be recorded in the annals as strange.

Sarah and Mayfield Marshall barely had their suitcases unpacked from an outstanding vacation in Europe when they opened up the doors of their home to host the recent La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn.’s annual Hamburger Night.

It was a beautiful and balmy August night when more than 75 people came to enjoy this annual end-of-summer party that has become tradition for the group.

It was actually like a giant neighborhood potluck dinner as guests brought a potpourri of dishes ranging from tasty appetizers to desserts. The Association provided the important ingredients for a great barbecue — hamburgers with all the fixins’, potato salad and baked beans.

Wearing the chef hats as they ruled over the barbecues were Dustin Crumb and Jim Geoghegan.

Among those enjoying the food and ambience were Barbara Marshall, Dorothy and Bob Lyans, Adele and Will Hillyer, Betty Jones, Becky and Chuck Gelhaar, Mary and Duane Batenhorst, Ruth and Randy Duncan, Diane and John Landrum, Kay Payer, Joyce and Richard Schlaker, Peggy Hotaling, Bob Wallace, Lee and Merv Johnson, Lillian and Roy Olofson, Fran and Bill Evans, Adrienne Morgan, Peg and Bill Barber, Julie Cameron and David Granish, Jean and Ron Zink, Sherrill and Jim Carbonetti, Claire Slaughter, Sue Beatty, and Mary and Daryal Gant.

Also enjoying the festivities were Clyde Hemphill, Chuck Hughes, Dave Moffett, Barbara and Jack Dawson, Vera and Garth Gragg, Pamela and Bud Carney, Joyce and Bob Covey, Ann and Bob Neilson, Art Johnson, Eremita Miranda and Larry Andreason, Fernando Rapelo, Donna Franklin, Cynthia and John Benton, Fran Delaney, Nancy and Dick Grippi, Nancy Thurston, Adene Sweet and Jim Misamore, Gloria and Stewart Lee, Brenda Gant and Jeff Hughes.

The next Tournament of Roses Assn. Happy Hour will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, at the home of Jean and Don Spomer, 1005 White Deer Drive, La Cañada. Anyone over 18 is welcome and no reservation is required. Just bring an appetizer or dessert to share, buy your beverage of choice at a nominal cost, and support our city’s float for the 2011 Rose Parade:: “3-2-1 DIG!”.
