More than 40,000 people turned out for the 13th annual Oktoberfest in Montrose, breaking all attendance records for the one-day event. Approximately 2,200 pounds of bratwurst were served up to hungry diners, according to organizers.

Thirty Years Ago

The La Cañada High School Spartan Boosters Club held its annual fundraiser, “Western Fun Night.” The festivities were held in the gym at the neighboring St. Francis High School campus.

Forty Years Ago

Over the objections of local civic groups, the Los Angeles County Planning Commission granted a zone exception that would allow a McDonald’s restaurant to be built in the 800 block of Foothill Boulevard, next to the building now occupied by Taylor’s steakhouse. An appeal of the ruling was expected.

Fifty Years Ago

The members of Church of the Lighted Window (today known as La Cañada Congregational Church) voted unanimously to call the Rev. Myron Meckel to serve as their new pastor. Meckel, a native of Minnesota, came from a family of Congregational ministers.
