Twenty Years Ago

In a tragic incident that rocked the otherwise quiet neighborhood, La Cañada resident Roma Jacobs, 78, was killed at her Durwood Drive home by her 43-year-old daughter, Victoria Jacobs-Madeira. Family members said Jacobs-Madeira had been diagnosed as a paranoid-schizophrenic and that the killing followed more than 20 years of mental instability.

Thirty Years Ago

La Cañada Flintridge City Councilman George Parrish, who served as the city’s first mayor, resigned from his post to become general manager of the Rancho Santa Fe Association. Parrish and his family had lived in La Cañada since 1960.

Forty Years Ago

The La Cañada High School Boosters Club was formally organized in the fall of 1970 and embarked on a campaign to enlist as many fathers as possible to pay the $10 membership fee. The club’s first president was Frank Baldi.

Fifty Years Ago

By a 2-1 margin, La Cañada voters approved a unified school district covering kindergarten through 12th-grade, removing La Cañada junior- and senior-high students from the Pasadena Unified High School District. The next step in the process would be to schedule a school board election.
