Ten Years Ago: Carol Liu of La Cañada Flintridge was sworn in as a freshman legislator in the state Assembly. At a meeting later the same day, her former colleagues on the City Council declined to appoint a temporary replacement for Liu, whose seat on the local panel was set to expire in the spring of 2001.

Twenty Years Ago: JPL received an award from a Southland commuter transportation group and the Southern California Assn. of Governments for its effective employee ride-share program. In the previous two years, the local facility had eliminated 325 daily vehicle trips.

Thirty Years Ago: The La Cañada school board named Donald Hagen, then serving as assistant principal at Rolling Hills High School as the new principal of La Cañada High School, effective in mid-January 1981.

Forty Years Ago: Mrs. James Vohs in December 1970 created a gingerbread house to enter in the nine-day Christmas Decorating Show at Descanso Gardens on behalf of the Assistance League of Flintridge. The creation was featured on a cover of the Valley Sun.Fifty Years Ago: La Cañadan Joe Sherburn, who for 12 years had operated The Yellow Jacket restaurant on Foothill at Angeles Crest Highway, announced plans for a $110,00 eatery called “The Crest House, which would go into a strip center on Foothill at Gould Avenue (where Round Table Pizza is today).
