Ten Years Ago: The members of the La Cañada Unified School District Governing Board elected board colleague Barbara Racklin to serve as 2001 president.

Twenty Years Ago: The La Cañada High School boys’ basketball team set an all-time Spartan scoring record by beating St. Francis High School by 107-44. Senior forward Jeff Burns paced the attack with 24 points.

Thirty Years Ago: Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Pieper and her husband Darold, then president of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce, welcomed their first child. They named their son Christopher Radcliff Pieper.

Forty Years Ago: When prominent Flintridge resident Charles Stone Jones died at the age of 75, then-Gov. Ronald Reagan, U.S. Sen. George Murphy and other dignitaries attended his memorial service at Forest Lawn-Glendale. Jones, who had also been a close friend and advisor to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, had an illustrious career, serving first as board chairman of Richfield Oil Company. After that firm merged with Atlantic Refining Co. in 1966, Jones served on the board of the resulting Atlantic Richfield Co.

Fifty Years Ago: The Rancho-La Cañada Civic Association, made up of homeowners in the new development that included Alminar Avenue, Viro Road and adjoining streets, announced plans for its annual Christmas Outdoor Home Decorating Contest. Also in the works was a specially scheduled visit to the neighborhood by Santa Claus.
