Guild pledges $175,000 to hospital facility

The Flintridge La Cañada Guild of Huntington Memorial Hospital kicked off its 2010-11 fundraising season by pledging $175,000 for the hospital’s emergency and trauma center. Funds are designated to expansion of the center and construction of a new emergency multi-media conference room. This conference room is intended to serve as a command center for disaster/triage coordination with multiple agencies, as well as for operational and training needs.

Funds will be raised through the guild’s annual Children’s Horse Show held each spring at the Flintridge Riding Club. The show is the oldest, and now the only, children’s Class A horse show in America, with riders coming from across the United States to compete, show their horses, and meet the requirements for later participation in Olympic trials.

The 90th annual Children’s Horse Show is scheduled for April 29 through May 1. For information about Horse Show participation or sponsorship, contact Kris Korkunis at (818) 952-5373 or Lauren Oakes at (818) 790-2622.

With its recent pledge, the Flintridge La Cañada Guild’s contribution to the Emergency and Trauma Center will total $500,000. Recent gifts include the funding of an entire treatment room as well as support for the center’s completion. The Guild also has purchased life-saving equipment for Huntington Hospital’s Neonatal Department. The group has contributed approximately $2 million over the years to support Huntington Hospital.

Kiwanians ring the bell for charity

Kiwanis Club of La Cañada-AM member Dave Hemstreet and granddaughter Fiona rang the Salvation Army bell at Ralphs La Cañada last weekend while Hemstreet’s other granddaughter Martina played Christmas music for the donors.

For the past nine years, La Cañada’s morning Kiwanis Club has won the competition for most money raised competition among Kiwanis clubs in the Glendale-Foothills area. Last year, Kiwanis-AM bested the Glendale club by less than $100. Competition this year will go down to the wire, with more than 30 members of the AM club ringing the bell at Ralphs La Cañada during December.
