Forty Years Ago: A possible shoot-out between deputies and an armed Flintridge man was averted when the suspect, a 47-year-old Madison Road resident, gave up after barricading himself in his kitchen. The man surrendered after firing three shots from his revolver.

Fifty Years Ago: An electric fan that had been left on and a faulty fluorescent light were among possible causes investigators identified in the case of a fire at La Cañada Junior High that gutted the school’s library and destroyed up to 18,000 books, causing $110,000 in damage.
