Ten Years Ago: A 23-year-old La Cañada Flintridge man who wandered through intermittent snow flurries and rain in the Angeles National Forest was rescued after he was spotted by a rescue team that was searching the area by helicopter. The man, who been riding his bicycle when he lost his way in fog, was ultimately found near Big Tujunga Canyon Road.

Twenty Years Ago: American flags were installed along Foothill Boulevard by city workers the day after the U.S. entered the Persian Gulf War. City leaders specified that the flags were to remain in place for the duration of the conflict.

Thirty Years Ago: Then a new business in La Cañada, Georgee’s Pizza in the 700 block of Foothill Blvd. was broken into one Thursday night in January 1980. The intruders got away with cash and a television set.

Forty Years Ago: Lassie, the collie of television fame, appeared at Lanterman Auditorium for a benefit performance of the then-active La Cañada Humane Society.

Fifty Years Ago: After nine years of planning, ground was broken for the $350,000 Crescenta-Cañada YMCA at 1930 Foothill Blvd. A 45-minute ceremony was held on the newly graded hillside building site.

Sixty Years Ago: When it became apparent that a population boom here was leading to a crisis in the public schools, civic leader John L. Clarke stepped up to serve as chairman of a citizens’ committee to assist in planning for more classroom space.
