P.E.O. chapter holds summer luncheon

With a nod to the recent British royal wedding, members of Chapter OM, P.E.O. donned hats for their summer luncheon at the home of Michelle Hall.

President Nancy Cabot greeted members, introduced guests and thanked the social committee for a wonderful lunch. Joining the hostess as members of the committee were Nancy Neville, Sue Burns, Allison Wilt, Margaret Watts and Cathy Palermo.

P.E.O. is an international philanthropic educational organization providing loans and scholarships to college women, and to women needing new skills to enter the workforce. P.E.O. also supports Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. Chapter OM contributed more than $3,000 toward these scholarships this year. Kiwanians gather for summer social

More than 50 members of the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada gathered at the La Crescenta residence of Mary and Daryal Gant on Sunday for a summer social.

The menu featured grilled chicken skewers, shrimp, beef tenderloin and salmon, accompanied by twice-baked potatoes. The meal was topped off by peach cobbler.

The annual event was coordinated by member Stewart Lee and catered by Cut Carve and Pour. Mary Gant is the incoming president of the Kiwanis organization. She will assume office in October.

The club, known unofficially as the Noon Kiwanis, meets weekly at Descanso Gardens and numbers 98 members. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

Rogan to sign books at local barbecue

Former Congressman James Rogan will speak and sign copies of his new book, “Catching Our Flag,” at a Republican barbecue scheduled for 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21 at the Jeffers estate, 1823 Foothill Blvd.

The book will be available for sale at the reduced rate of $19.95 at the event. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door; advance reservations are strongly encouraged. Reservations can be made by calling the Glendale Burbank Republican Assembly (818) 249-3923).

Admission includes a meal of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and all the fixings, along with a soft drink or water. The local Sardo Brothers Band will be playing throughout the afternoon. There will be a drawing for a cash prize.
